The Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have issued a communiquรฉ offering hope and guidance to Nigerians amidst the country’s social and economic challenges. In a statement signed by Archbishop Lucius I. Ugorji and Bishop Augustine N. Echema, the bishops said that “The mood of the nation is one of frustration, anger, and hopelessness,” citing skyrocketing inflation, hunger, and perceived bad governance. “The reforms introduced by the current administration have not brought the promised hope, and the people are suffering,” they said.
The bishops also addressed the planned nationwide youth protest, urging caution and restraint to avoid violence and bloodshed. “While peaceful protests are a democratic right, we believe that protests alone cannot resolve our national problems,” they said. They emphasized the need for collective action, transparency, and accountability to address the nation’s challenges.
The bishops further emphasized the need for soul-searching and collective action to address the country’s challenges. “We need visionary leadership that inspires trust and confidence,” they said. They also called for proper leadership in various sectors, including business, politics, public service, security agencies, and essential services. “All of these different sectors must come together as part of the same wheel of progress,” they added.
To address the nation’s woes, the bishops recommendedย full participation by all in the Year of Prayerย declared by the Holy Father, leading up to the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025. They believe that intensified prayer and intercession can bring about reconciliation, healing, and positive change.
The Catholic Church, the bishops noted, shares in the joys and sorrows of Nigerians and will continue to promote peace, justice, and development.
In conclusion, the bishops invoked the intercession of Mary, the Queen of Peace, praying for guidance, wisdom, and hope for Nigeria.
