The Catholic Church in Nigeria has urged media practitioners to be “narrators of hope” and to use their platforms to promote truth, justice, and moral clarity.
The call was made by the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, during the 5th edition of the annual Media Parley held at the CSN premises in Abuja.
Fr. Banjo emphasized the importance of media practitioners in shaping the narrative of the country and promoting values that uphold the common good. He encouraged them to reject misinformation, fake news, and sycophancy, and instead, to be the voice of the poor, marginalized, and unheard.
Fr. Banjo emphasized that the role of the media and communicators in the Jubilee year of hope is to be “narrators of hope,” sharing “stories of hope” that nurture life. He encouraged media practitioners to fill their platforms with hope, promoting truth and fostering a sense of community and responsibility.
The Church official urged media practitioners to uphold their noble role as the voice of the poor, marginalized, and unheard in society, and to reject misinformation, fake news, and sycophancy. “You are not just reporters or commentators; you are custodians of truth and essential partners in the moral renewal of Nigeria,” he emphasized.
The 2025 Media Parley, which had over 41 media outfits in attendance, is an annual exercise convened by the CSN National Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr.ย Michael Nsikak Umoh, to appreciate and interact with the press, and encourage them in their work, services to the church and the nation.
