The Catholic Diocese of Ogoja has officially launched its Migrants and Refugees Unit, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to providing pastoral care and support to those in need. The launch ceremony, held on October 25, 2024, at the Adagom 1 Refugee settlement in Cross River State, was attended by representatives from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Caritas International, and other local and international organizations.
The event began with an Opening Mass celebrated by Diocesan Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Matthew Otuji, who represented the Catholic Bishop of Ogoja, Most Rev. Donatus Edet Akpan. In his remarks, Fr. Otuji acknowledged the efforts of organizations providing care to refugees in the diocese and emphasized the Catholic Church’s long-standing commitment to supporting struggling and suffering individuals. He noted that the Church has established various social works organs, including Caritas International and the Justice Development and Peace Commission, to address the needs of migrants and refugees.
The Diocesan Coordinator of the Unit, Rev. Fr. Titus Armon, in his Keynote Address, highlighted the Unit’s focus on fostering the integral humanity of migrants and refugees through specially crafted programs and interventions. Humanitarian agencies and partners in attendance pledged to collaborate with the Church in this mission.
Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mrs. Annick Nahimana, praised the diocese’s timely initiative, citing the growing need for collaboration in refugee care.
A highlight of the event was the distribution of clothing, food, and rosaries to 80 refugee families.
This launch follows the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria’s inauguration of the Migrants and Refugees Unit in July 2024, aligning with Pope Francis’ pastoral plan. The Diocese of Ogoja’s efforts aim to provide holistic pastoral care and support to migrants and refugees, by promoting compassion and community building efforts.
