As part of the Church’s effort in addressing the complexities and challenges of interreligious dialogue, understanding and cooperation among Nigeria’s diverse faith communities, the Department of Mission and Dialogue, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), at the 2024 Annual Meeting of Diocesan Directors of Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue, championed discussions towards promoting interfaith harmony and human fraternity.
The three-day gathering, with the theme: “Emerging Areas and Challenges to Dialogue with Believers of Other Faith,” held from November 5-7, 2024, at the CSN premises. It brought together experts and stakeholders to explore emerging areas and challenges in dialogue among Catholics with believers of other faiths.
The meeting kick-started with a presentation from the Director, Department of Mission and Dialogue, CSN, Rev. Fr. Joseph Nomwahge, SMA, on “Dialogue at the Service of Mission.”
Other notable presentations included: “Islam and Basic Concepts of the Islamic Religion” by Fr. Simon Onoja, SMA, “African Traditional Religion and the Emerging Challenges” by Fr. Michael Ushe, “Interfaith Relations as a Necessary Bridge Building Exercise” by Fr. Emmanuel Unamba, and a presentation on “Sensitive Communications for Dialogue Encounters” by the Episcopal Secretary for Interreligious Dialogue, Rev. Fr. Lawrence Emehel.
The gathering further provided a platform for participants to engage in group discussions, fostering collaboration and shared understanding. It also witnessed the celebration of the Holy Mass and Office of the Hours.
