Today, the Catholic Diocese of Warri witnessed a milestone in her administrative journey with the blessing and commissioning of the newly built “Mother of Perpetual Help Chancery.” The event, held at the chancery’s site on 5 Enerhen Road, Effurun, Delta State, gathered an array of clergy, consecrated persons, and laity from across the diocese to witness and celebrate this monumental occasion.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who blessed and commissioned the chancery, alongside Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido (Bishop of Warri) and Most Rev. John Okeoghene Afareha (Bishop Emeritus of Warri).
Bishop Anthony Ewherido, in his heartfelt welcome address, expressed deep gratitude to God for guiding the diocese toward the realization of this vital project. He also acknowledged and appreciated Most Rev. John Afareha, the Bishop Emeritus, for conceiving and beginning this project. He spoke of the chancery as a much-needed centre for diocesan administration, pastoral planning, and evangelization, dedicated to advancing the Church’s mission in the region.
Cardinal Onaiyekan, during his closing remarks, expressed his joy at seeing such growth within the diocese and commended Bishop Ewherido and the diocese for their tireless commitment. He remarked that the Mother of Perpetual Help Chancery would be a place where the diocese’s ministries and pastoral services would flourish under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
In a special moment that underscored the day’s significance, plaques of appreciation were presented to His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and Most Rev. John Okeoghene Afareha who first envisioned and began this project.
Various diocesan groups attended in joyful solidarity, each represented by delegates, including members of the Laity Council, CMO, CWO, CYON, etc. The presence of the Papal Knights, the Knights of St. John, the Knights of St. Mulumba, and the Knights of St. Paul added a special resonance to the day’s celebrations.
As the day drew to a close, many expressed gratitude for being part of such a ceremony. There was a sense of excitement and hope in the air, with attendees already envisioning the many ways the chancery would serve as a beacon of faith and a centre for diocesan life. Under the protection of Our Lady, this new chancery will surely play a vital role in the growth and vitality of the Catholic community in Warri for many generations.
