HISTORY OF DIOCESE

Evangelization in the Province now known as the Diocese of Ogoja, one of
the oldest in Calabar Ecclesiastical Province, started on December 5, 1885, when Fr. Lutz, a Holy Ghost Priest from France, arrived Onitsha.
When he died in 1895, Fr. Lejeune succeeded him. After Fr. Lejeune came Fr.
Joseph Shanahan, a great apostle of Southern Nigeria and the Cameroons.
Under him, the Catholic faith reached Calabar, Ogoja, and other parts of the Cross River State, Tiv land and the Cameroons.
Rev. Fr. Shanahan was consecrated Bishop in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. At his consecration, he requested for a mission in Tiv land. The Pope granted his request. He then sent two priests, Fr. Douvry and Fr. Mellet, to carry out the mission. The two priests arrived at the present day Ogoja Town on May 15, 1921.
The Fathers decided to stay in Ogoja, since the weather and the road were not good enough for them to continue to the Tiv land. This stay which was meant to be temporary became permanent. Ogoja became a centre of Missionary activities.
From the centre, the fathers carried the evangelical work to Obudu, Tiv land, Wanokom, Kakwagom and other places. They opened a catechetical school to train catechists and interpreters who would help them overcome language barrier.
On 3rd June, 1921, Mr. John Anyogu, later Bishop John Cross Anyogu of Enugu, was installed as the first school teacher by the fathers. The school and church were named St. Benedict, after Pope St. Benedict XV who gave the approval for the establishment of this mission.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE
OGOJA DIOCESE
Province: Calabar Erection: January 1, 1955In 1930, Fr. James Moynagh, later the Bishop of Calabar, Patrick Costelloe, later the General of St. Patrick’s Society, Fr. Thomas McGettrick, first Bishop of Ogoja and Abakaliki Dioceses, arrived the scene as volunteers at the request of Bishop Shanahan. The increasing strength of the volunteers was responsible for the opening of Okuni on the Cross River as a residential station in 1934.
For fear that the stay of the Maynooth priests would be a short one, since they were volunteers. Msgr. Whitney founded the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society at Kiltegan, Ireland, in 1932.
With more hands at work, Calabar, which comprised Ogoja and Calabar became a Prefecture in 1934, with Msgr. James Moynagh as its Prefect Apostolic. Ogoja too, became a Prefecture on March 13, 1938.
In 1955, Ogoja was raised to the status of a Diocese and Fr. McGettrick became its first Bishop. Since mid 1960s. Ogoja has produced many indigenous priests who have worked hand in hand with the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society priests at evangelizing Ogoja.
Owing to growth in population, the Diocese lost part of its territory which resulted in the erection of Abakaliki Diocese in 1973. Again, Bishop Thomas McGettrick became the first Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese; while Fr.
Joseph Edra Ukpo who was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Ogoja in 1971, was installed the Second Bishop of Ogoja Diocese in 1973. With the transfer and Installation of Bishop
Joseph Edra Ukpo as the Archbishop of Calabar, Fr. John Ebebe Ayah was consecrated and installed the third Bishop of Ogoja on January 6, 2007.
With the transfer and installation of Bishop John Ebebe Ayah as the second Bishop of Uyo on September 20, 2014, he was appointed by the Holy Father as the Apostolic Administrator of Ogoja Diocese pending when a new Chief Shepherd would be appointed for the diocese.
