ST. JOSEPH: A MAN OF FAITH AND A MODEL FOR EVERY FAMILY

By: Very Rev. Fr. Augustine Okochi

Director, Pastoral Agents -CSN

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the foster-father of Jesus, and the patron of the Church. St. Joseph is one of the most remarkable figures in the Gospel, not because he speaks many words, but because he listens to God and obeys Him.

In today’s Gospel, Joseph faces a painful and confusing situation. Mary, to whom he is betrothed, is found to be with child. Joseph does not yet understand what God is doing, but the Gospel says he was a righteous man. His righteousness is seen not in anger or harsh judgment, but in mercy and compassion. Even before the angel speaks to him, Joseph shows a good and noble heart.

Then the angel appears to him in a dream and says: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home… You are to name him Jesus.” And Joseph responds in the most beautiful way possible: he obeys. The Gospel says,“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.”

This is why Joseph is a man of faith. Faith is not only believing when everything is clear. Faith is trusting God even when life is uncertain. Joseph did not have all the answers, but he trusted the God who called him. He accepted Mary. He accepted the child Jesus. He accepted a mission greater than himself.

Joseph teaches us that true faith always leads to action. He did not only hear God’s word; he acted on it. He took Mary into his home. He accepted the responsibility of being the father to Jesus. He protected his family, provided for them, and guided them with love and humility.

This is why St. Joseph is such a powerful model for the modern head of the family.

First, Joseph was a man who listened to God. In today’s world, many families suffer because there is so much noise and very little prayer. The head of a family must be someone who listens to God, seeks His will, and leads the home in faith.

Second, Joseph accepted responsibility. He did not run away from a difficult situation. He did not choose convenience over commitment. Today, many families are wounded by abandonment, neglect, or lack of responsibility. St. Joseph teaches us that real love stays, sacrifices, and remains faithful.

Third, Joseph was a protector. He protected Mary and Jesus from danger. He led them to safety. He worked hard to provide for them. A good head of the family must do the same: protect the home not only from physical danger, but also from bad influences, moral confusion, and spiritual neglect.

Fourth, Joseph was humble and hardworking. He was a carpenter. He served his family in the hidden life of Nazareth. He did not seek attention or praise. Many fathers and mothers today may feel unnoticed in their daily sacrifices, but St. Joseph reminds us that quiet faithfulness is precious in the eyes of God.

Finally, Joseph led by example. Jesus grew up in the home of Joseph. That means Joseph’s life helped shape the human environment in which Jesus was raised. This reminds us that children learn not only from what parents say, but from what they do. The best lesson in the home is the witness of prayer, honesty, patience, and love.

Dear brothers and sisters, St. Joseph tells us that holiness is possible in ordinary family life. A home becomes holy when God is welcomed there-when there is prayer, trust, obedience, forgiveness, and love.

On this feast day, let us ask St. Joseph to intercede for all fathers, mothers, and all heads of families. May he teach them to trust God, to accept responsibility with courage, and to lead their homes with wisdom and love.

May our prayer today be:

St. Joseph, man of faith, guardian of Mary, foster-father of Jesus,
pray for our families.
Teach us to listen to God,
to obey Him with courage,
and to build homes of peace, love, and holiness.
Amen.
