Media workers charged on effective reportage: Bishop Michael Odogwu Elue

Media Workers have been charged on the effective use of morden information technology also know as “artificial intelligence”( AI).

The charge was given by the bishop of Issele-Uku diocese Most Rev. Dr Michael Odogwu Elue who was represented by Rev. Fr. Peter Mokwunye, Principal St. Patrick’s college, Asaba at the just concluded 60th anniversary of the World Commincations Day with the theme ” preserving Human voices and faces”.

This years World Commincation Sunday took place at St. Michael’s Military Chaplaincy 63 brigade headquarters, Anwai road, Asaba and was well attended by members of the Catholic Association of Media practitioners from the different media out fits.

Speaking earlier in his sermon, Bishop Elue stressed on the advantages and disadvantages of Artificial intelligence (AI) and revealed the importance of having a face to face encounter with news reporting and not the use of AI as a tool for reporting. He urged journalist in the Media world to always take control of the use of AI in their reportage and not the other way round by reporting false, fake and negative issues adding that AI should not be allowed to consume their intelligence rather AI should be personally developed for better end results.

Bishop Elue however warned journalist on the growing spread of fake identities, misinformation and digital disconnection in the Media space, he called journalist and social media users to embrace truth, responsibilities and respect for human dignity in communication, while stressing that communication remains central to human existence. In his word, “to live is to communicate in either ways like speech, writing or in digital platforms”.

World Commincation Day is a day set aside annually to reflect on the responsibility that comes with communication mostly in this era dominated by social media and digital interactions.

In their separate interviews, the representative of the Bishop Rev Fr Dr Peter Mokwunye and Rev Fr Charles Ogwnwa the Director of Social Communication, urged journalist to take advantage of the AI by reporting effectively well and not for fake, untrue and faceless reportage. Speaking also in an interview with the Vice Chairman CAMPAN, Issele-Uku Diocese Mrs Mariam Ugeh, she commended the Director of Social Communication, Rev fr Charles Uganwa for his coordination and members of the association for their willingness and cooperation towards a successful celebration of this years event and called on Catholic Media workers in the various media outfit to come out enmass to support the group by making their own input towards the growth of the association.

This years event, the Popes message was reviewed by Ezinne Patricia Biose while the father of the day was Engr. Lawrence Ejiofor, mother of the day was Ezinne Veronica Nwanze the Chairman of the occasion was Professor ( Chief) Kemi Emina.
