In a rare display of interfaith goodwill, the Lagos State University Muslim Community (LASUMC) has extended heartfelt congratulations to the global Catholic community on the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the 267th Pope, who has taken the title Pope Leo XIV.
Describing the Popeโs new role as a beacon of peace in a troubled world, LASUMC noted that his past missionary work among the vulnerable in Peru has uniquely prepared him for the task of global spiritual leadership.
In a statement released on Friday, Chief Imam of LASUMC, Prof. Amidu Sanni, said:
โOn behalf of the Muslim community of LASU, I send a goodwill message to the 1.4 billion Catholic faithful on the successful selection of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the 267th Pontiff. His background of humility and service among the poor speaks volumes of the values he will uphold.โ
Prof. Sanni praised Pope Leo XIVโs first message to the world, calling it โphilosophical and timely,โ especially in the face of current global challenges marked by conflicts, nuclear threats, and rising political tension.
โHis call for disarmament and reconciliation resonates deeply in todayโs divided world. It is a reminder to all global leaders, including in Africa, to prioritize peace, human dignity, and public good,โ Sanni added.
Pope Leo XIV was elected on Thursday after a second round of voting by 133 cardinals. He becomes the first American and North American Pope in history. Born in Chicago in 1955, he holds degrees in Mathematics, Divinity, and Canon Law, and is recognized for his grassroots missionary work in Peru.
The Nigerian Christian community, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Lagos Archdiocese, have also celebrated the historic election.
