Pope Donates €1 Million to Aid Rome’s Housing Crisis

By Charles Igwe

Pope Francis has donated €1 million to renovate a former clergy house in Rome, transforming it into 20 apartments for those in need.

The donation was first mentioned on January 30 during a gathering in memory of Don Roberto Sardelli at the Roman parish of San Policarpo, though the exact amount was not disclosed at the time. The full figure was later confirmed in a letter from Cardinal Baldassare Reina, Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, to diocesan priests.

Cardinal Reina highlighted that the donation aligns with the upcoming Jubilee of Seminarians, Bishops, and Priests, scheduled for June 23–27, 2025. As part of their spiritual preparation, he emphasized the importance of offering a “concrete sign of charity and hope.”

The housing crisis in Rome was a key issue during Pope Francis’ visit to the diocesan assembly at St. John Lateran on October 25. Cardinal Reina noted that the Church has already raised concerns with authorities but stressed the need for direct action.

“If we have raised our voices, I believe it is important to take a prophetic action that gives greater credibility to what we have said,” he stated.

To further support those struggling with housing, the Diocese has launched the Don Roberto Sardelli Fund, named after a priest known for his dedication to the homeless. The fund will assist families unable to meet rental contract requirements or those struggling with rising rents.

Cardinal Reina invited clergy members to contribute by donating a month’s worth of their financial support or a portion of it. He expressed hope that this initiative would inspire broader participation, encouraging more people to support the Sardelli Fund and actively address Rome’s housing crisis.
