Catholic Military, Paramilitary, and Police Chaplains have been urged to remember their ordination vows of obedience and submission to their bishops, regardless of rank.
The Catholic Bishop of Shendam Diocese and Episcopal Chairman for Military Chaplaincies, Most Rev. Philip Dung, made this reminder at the inaugural joint military, paramilitary, and police Catholic chaplains’ conference on September 27, 2024, at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN).
Bishop Dung emphasized, “Your allegiance is to your bishops. Remember the vows of obedience you took at ordination; you are well-trained Catholic priests.”
In his homily at the Opening Mass of the conference, Bishop Dung challenged chaplains to emulate Christ’s selfless service to the poor and vulnerable. He noted, “True faith requires concrete actions, serving those in need.”
Drawing from Saint Vincent de Paul’s example, Bishop Dung urged chaplains to address Nigeria’s challenges: poverty, hunger, and inequality.
“Today, Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including poverty, hunger, and inequality,” Bishop Dung noted. “As chaplains, you are uniquely positioned to make a difference, to bring Christ’s love and compassion to those who need it most.”
Bishop Dung challenged the chaplains to examine their actions, ensuring they align with their faith. He urged them to use their time wisely in prioritizing God’s will.
“Ask yourself, what am I doing in my place of assignment to continue Christ’s mission? How am I strengthening the faith of others and my own?
Time is a precious gift. Let us use it to serve others, to bring glory to God, and to emulate Christ’s example.”
On his part, the Director of Pastoral Agents, CSN, Rev. Fr. Augustine Okochi, emphasized that the Chaplains should get more closer to their bishops. He noted, “they are like fathers to us, they want us to get closer to them, from time to time, call your bishop and check on him.”
The conference, attended by chaplains from various military, paramilitary, and police units, aimed to reignite and re-evaluate their commitment to serving humanity and the church. It is organised by the department of Pastoral Agents of the CSN.
