“Simplicity of Life is One of the Best Ways to Bear Witness to Christ,” Archbishop Akubeze Admonishes Bishops, Priests

In his homily on the first day of the ongoing plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Auchi, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, who was the Chief Celebrant, urged bishops and priests to embrace simplicity of life as a powerful testament to their faith. The archbishop emphasized that living in accordance with the evangelical vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience allows bishops, priests and other consecrated persons to follow Christ more closely.

Archbishop Akubeze underscored the importance of fidelity to these vows, asserting that daily sacrificesโ€”such as renouncing personal wealth, controlling one’s sexuality, and adhering to the directives of superiorsโ€”are invaluable in the eyes of God. He declared that such devotion surpasses any worldly luxury and is more rewarding than years spent in material wealth and luxurious palaces.

The archbishop called on priests and religious to let their lifestyles reflect their message to the secular world. He disapproved the pursuit of wealth and advised bishops to create environments that ease the burdens of their subordinates, ensuring that obedience is embraced rather than merely enforced.

Referencing the Gospel passage of the day, from John, Archbishop Akubeze highlighted the need for leaders to treat their fellow religious with respect rather than servitude. He emphasized that a joyful, dignified approach to fulfilling assigned duties fosters a welcoming environment for others seeking spiritual fulfillment.

Furthermore, the Archbishop spoke about the need to revive areas of spiritual stagnation, describing various failures and unforgiving attitudes as “dry bones” in God’s vineyard. He urged the bishops and priests to persist in their efforts despite challenges, reminding them that fidelity, even when not immediately rewarded, is ultimately what God values.

The homily concluded with a call for perseverance and continued effort in faith, reflecting the parable of the seed that yields different fruits depending on the soil.
