The maiden edition of the Catechism Quiz competition organized by the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia ended on Saturday with Oweh ifechukwu of the St Finbarrโs Catholic Church Umuahia emerging Champion with the Star prize N150,000.
The event is the first of its kind in the Ecclisiastical province that was held at the Jubilee Auditorium Complex, Mater Dei Cathedral Umuahia saw two siblings Okoye Chisom and Okoye Chinaza placing second and third and going home with N100,000 and N50,000 respectively.
Declaring the event open, the Bishop Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, the Most Rev. Dr . Michael Ukpong Kalu said the competition which was in Igbo language is aimed at reviving the teachings of the church at all levels and among Adherents.
Bishop Ukpong Kalu pointed out that it is through studying Catechism and learning the word that understanding will emerge with the concomitant love which is the pivot of Christianity.
He lauded the massive participation by Competitors who emerged from different Deanaries and reminded all that the prizes to be won were less important than the spiritual impartation that emanates from the teachings of the church.ย
In his speech, the Very Rev. Fr. Innocent Imo Okore, Head, Diocesan Religious Education and Catechesis thanked the Bishop for the initiative which has seen Umuahia Diocese take a historic lead in taking the teachings of the church to the people, particularly, the younger generation who have abandoned their mother tongue.
Speaking with HANTO Daily News at the event, the National President Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria, CAMPAN, Sir Chimdi Oluoha, commended the Bishop Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, Most Rev Ukpong Kalu for this historic initiative and called on other Dioceses to join the laudable step for the growth of the Church.
