In commemoration of the World Mental Health Day, staff of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Caritas Nigeria, and agencies of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) participated in a series of events highlighting the importance of mental health in the workplace.
With the 2024 theme: “Mental Health at Work,” the CBCN staff were sensitized on the need to prioritize mental health at work spaces to foster productivity, efficiency and growth.
The celebration commenced with a Holy Mass celebrated by the CSN Director of Church and Society and Executive Secretary/CEO of Caritas Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina. In his homily, he emphasized the importance of maintaining mental well-being, particularly in the workplace, where stressors can significantly impact employees’ mental health.
“Mental health is integral to our overall wellbeing. By prioritizing mental health at work, we create a supportive environment that benefits both employees and the organizations.”
Subsequently, staff members of CSN and agencies of the CBCN convened for a sensitization session on mental health.
In his lecture during the sensitization exercise, Clinical Psychologist of Caritas Nigeria, Dr. Raphael Aguanunu, gave a concise exposition on the nature of mental health. He disclosed the causes of mental health disorders and prescribed practical tips for maintaining mental wellness.
The Associate Director of Community and Prevention Services, Dr. Victor Enejoh, provided additional insights into the significance of mental health in the workplace. He outlined Caritas Nigeria’s efforts in fostering a supportive environment for its staff, promoting mental wellbeing and encouraging open discussions.
On his part, the Secretary General of CSN, Rev. Fr. Zachariah Samjumi, advised all to pay careful attention to their mental health. He appealed to all to exercise patience in their dealings with one another, explaining that the worrisome socioeconomic tension in the country, can trigger aggressive reactions at work place.
The Secretary General advised all staff to be moderate in their expenses and imbibe a healthy feeding habit. Emphasizing the Catholic bishops concern and commitment to staff mental wellbeing, Fr. Samjumi declared that the sensitization on mental health, will henceforth be observed as a monthly activity in the CSN community.
