On January 12, 1943 the Vicariate of Ondo-Ilorin, consisting of the Civil
Provinces of Ondo and Ilorin, was carved out of both the Vicariate of Asaba-Benin and the Vicariate of the Bight of Benin. Bishop Thomas Hughes S.M.A. was the Vicar Apostolic. In 1950, this Vicariate of Ondo-Ilorin became the Diocese of Ondo. His Lordship, Most Rev. Bishop Hughes, S.M.A., was appointed Bishop of the new diocese. On his death in 1957, he was succeeded by his Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. William R. Field, SMA., consecrated Bishop on April 27, 1958.
ONDO DIOCESE
Province: Ibadan Erection: April 18, 1950On December 6, 1960, the Prefecture of Ilorin was carved out of the Diocese of Ondo with Bishop William Mahony, SMA as its first Bishop.
On October 10, 1971, His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Michael O. Fagun, became the first Auxiliary Bishop of Ondo Diocese and when the Diocese of Ekiti was carved out of the Diocese of Ondo on October 10, 1972, he became the first Bishop of Ekiti.
Most Rev. Dr. Francis F. Alonge was appointment Titular Bishop of Thignica on December 17, 1973, ordained the Auxiliary Bishop of Ondo Diocese on April 21, 1974 and on retirement of Bishop Field on May 31, 1976 he was appointed the Bishop of the diocese of Ondo. His Episcopal Installation took place in the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Akure, on August 22, 1976. He became Bishop Emeritus of the diocese on November 26, 2010.
Monsignor Jude Ayodeji Arogundade was appointed the Coadjutor Bishop of the diocese on February 15, 2010. His Episcopal Ordination took place on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Araromi Street, Akure. He became the Bishop of Ondo diocese on November 26, 2010, succeeding Bishop Francis F.
Alonge.
The Diocese of Ondo, as it is today, has the same boundaries with Ondo State. The number of parishes, Mass Centres and priests has grown tremendously over the years. The Diocese has an area of 15,519 square kilometres with a population of about
3,441,024 of whom 257,858 are C a t h o l i c s . T h e D i o c e s a n Headquarters is in Akure, the Capital city of Ondo State.
