SIGNIS Africa lauds Nigerian Communications Week
By Vincent Njoku
At the recently concluded SIGNIS Africa Congress held in Kigali, Rwanda from July 11 to 15, 2022, Catholic Communicators, among other things, unanimously endorsed the Nigerian model of commemorating the World Communications Day.
The participants at the Congress extolled the initiative of the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria to expand the hitherto annual one day commemoration of communications in the Church to now last for a whole week. Recall that the Bishops had approved the Communications Week (ComWEEK) programme during the 2021 second plenary in Enugu State, with the maiden edition celebrated in all dioceses in Nigeria from Sunday, May 22 to 29, 2022.
The assembly of Communications experts further commended the National Office for Communication in Nigeria, under the leadership of the National Director of Social Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh, for successfully midwifing the maiden edition and for the enormous resources made available for easy participation at the Parish level.

Particularly, Monsignor Janvier Yameogo of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, who represented the Prefect of the Dicastery, Dr. Paolo Ruffini at the Congress, affirmed that the ComWEEK initiative will aid the vision of the Synod of Synodality as advanced by the Holy Father. This is because, at the heart of the ComWEEK programme is media literacy at the grassroots, which will sharpen the skills necessary for authentic communication.
In view of this, the Congress resolved to recommend the Nigerian model of ComWEEK to all Bishops Conferences in Africa through the Communications office of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).
